FROM THE PRESiDENT


Last month we discussed the correlation between employee motivation and business success, primarily focusing on methods of measuring these items. This month we continue on the same topic, discussing ways to improve motivation among the employees in your organization. An increasingly motivated staff not only improves morale, but increases efficiency and effectiveness.

Beliefs, values, interests, fears and peer pressure drive most individuals' actions and attitudes. Although these ideas are fairly common motivators, they do not apply to all people equally. With that in mind, each employee's individual needs and ideas should taken into consideration when trying to accomplish a common goal.

Managers have the power to influence motivation. Leading by example, rewarding positive performances, showing respect, and being honest with your employees are some ways that a manager can have a positive impact on motivation.

Consider the following ideas to foster a positive workplace and to increase employee motivation and morale.

·  Look out for employee personal needs and empathize with employees during times of personal distress

·  Allow the needs of your employees to coincide with the needs of your company

·  Allow employees to be a part of the planning and problem solving process. This is a learning experience for the employees, it gives them a personal interest in the task, it improves communication, and lastly it shows recognition and respect for the employee

·  Make the employee's job or task challenging and/or meaningful

·  Counsel employees that have a negative impact on the company, i.e. disruptive behavior or tardiness. On the other hand, if an outstanding employee makes a small mistake, do not let that overshadow all of their accomplishments

401(k) Allocation

Some of you may have recently received a letter regarding 401(k) fund allocation. If this is the case, part of or all of your 401(k) is invested in a fund with a low rate of return. If you do not provide investment instructions to Lincoln by January 1, 2006, your funds will be re-allocated to a default balanced fund chosen by the investment committee.

Online Termination Report

Employee Termination Reports are now being submitted online, via the Termination form on the HRi website. To use the form, login to the website using your client login and password and click the Documents link. There, you will find the Online Employee Termination Report. If you provide a valid email address, a copy of the report will be mailed back to you as a confirmation. Please note that this service is only available to HRi client approved web users.
