As you saw in last month's newsletter HRi and our clients are meeting with substantial success in improved employee selection and retention. Overall turnover continues in a downward trend. We can make even greater strides by enhancing a few processes.

The first day on the job notably sets the tone and attitude for the future. It can be a day of trepidation and uncertainty, and perhaps regret for the newly hired employee. However, a "first-day plan" can reinforce the wisdom of joining your company.

This plan can begin with a pre-notice to current employees that someone new is coming and include a description of what the newcomer will add to the group. This illuminates the common ground and will help the new employee feel more comfortable. Secondly, take a look at the scheduled starting time for the new worker. With all the first-of-week distractions, is first thing Monday morning a good time to have a "newbie" start work? It is easy to make them feel like an afterthought! Perhaps coming in at 9 or 10 on the first day (or a less busy day) is more practical. In many organizations the first activity is paperwork----does that really put our best foot forward? Set a plan for the entire day to make a positive impression. Finally, as you create your first-day plan, you may want to ask current workers what they liked about the way their first day was handled, and what kinds of things they would enhance.

By the time the new person reports for their first day, you already have a substantial investment in them. Remember there were ads, resumes, interviews, reference checks and perhaps drug screens. There is a significant task ahead of the new employee, or you wouldn't have hired them in the first place. With all these issues, it is important to get them off to a good start. In any event, keep in mind you have made a large investment in this new worker, and you need to protect your investment as you would any other asset. A first-day plan will help get them off on the right foot!

Great Strides

Human Resources, Inc. is proud to be a major sponsor of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), donating over $4,500 in the past year to help find a cure for this devastating disease. This year, we were a primary sponsor for the Annapolis GREAT STRIDES Walk that took place on June 4 at Quiet Waters Park. GREAT STRIDES is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's annual, nationwide walk event that raises money to help support vital Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research and care programs.

Erin Boensch, Systems Analyst for HRi, knows the devastating effects of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) firsthand - her daughter Zoe was born with the disease. Erin and a group of colleagues formed a team of friends and family and raised over $10,000 this year alone. The team joined over 400 walkers to support the cause with overwhelming success. The Annapolis walk alone raised over $150,000.

HRi Welcomes Julie McQuie

Julie McQuie, Business Development Manager, grew up in Chevy Chase Maryland and graduated from Towson University with a BS in Business Administration. Julie returned to graduate school, earning an MS in Human Resources Development in 1994. Julie's professional background includes 13 years of aligning several organizations HR strategies with their business goals.

Julie enjoys spending time with family and friends and participating in community outreach projects. Her Mottos to live by are:
