In the Washington DC market, most recent
statistics indicate that unemployment remains the lowest of eight major
cities. In fact, DC is much lower than Boston, Dallas, Miami,
Phoenix, St. Louis, San Francisco and Seattle. More specifically, St. Louis
is 5.6%, and only Miami and Phoenix are less than 4%. Over the past three
months DC remained the lowest of these markets, ranging between 2.9% and
3.1%. At these low rates, it becomes even more important to keep the good
employees you have, as replacing them may be extremely difficult. The pond
from which we all fish is small, and there aren’t very many “good catches” to be
had.
It is time to do a retention check. The
answer may not be to throw money at the problem. If you look at the
Herzberg model for motivating employees, you will find that what they
value, and hence why they remain at their present job, are the intangibles.
Among others, the intangibles include recognition, responsibility,
achievement, advancement and growth. It is not the same benefit and pay
issue that we tend to think about as the solution. Herzberg says these are
the basic motivators that push people to excel and give the worker
increased job satisfaction. As a result, the employee is more likely to
stay in the current position because he/she is getting a high level of
satisfaction from the work.
Remember that in addition to what Herzberg
calls the maintenance factors in the job world there is another side that
he calls motivators. Effective use of the motivators in your organization
may help keep the best and brightest of your work force, and keep you from
fishing in a very small pond for replacement workers.
